Spread bread cubes on large cookie sheets; place
in oven at 250° F for 10 minutes; remove from oven; reserve. Cut
sausage into thick slices. Brown 5 minutes on each side in a medium-size
skillet, then break into small pieces. Cook 1 minute longer or until
no trace of pink remains. Combine with bread cubes in a large bowl.
Pour off drippings from skillet; measure; return 2 tablespoons. Add
onions, and sauté‚ until tender. Stir in water and apples;
heat to boiling. Pour over sausage mixture; add salt; toss lightly
until evenlymoist. Makes approximately 10 cups.
